Billy Collins, Bagels and Other Things – December 6th

I often use the internet to read the work of my favourite poets.  One of these poets is Billy Collins, a previous poet laureate of America.   On utube, there are several  recordings of Billy reading his own poetry.  There is also a website designed by Billy to give students an appreciation of poetry.

I have many favourites on this site but do read the one about the Bagel by David Ignatow No 62

Just a bit of chit chat today.  The abundance of poets continues. Last week at a writers’ Christmas meeting in Nelson, we did a mystery book swap. All wrapped up prettily but no gift card. Instead our names were plucked out of a box. When my turn came…with eyes shut and not expecting much I chose a small volume which turned out to be a signed copy of Vincent O’Sullivan’s latest collection. ‘The movie may be slightly different’ published by Victoria University Press this year.  What a thrill! For me this collection is full of surprises and I will be dipping in for a while yet.

Tomorrow we have a Nelson launch for Boulder Writers 3 at the Freehouse’s new Yurt in Collingwood Street.  And I forgot to mention the very well attended launch at Founders, Nelson, for Rachel Bush’s new book ‘Pretty Things and others’ also published by Victoria University Press. An informal discussion between Bill Manhire and Rachel gave a wonderful insight into the book’s inspiration.   The queue to buy a copy was enviable among poets.  Check the link below.
