Tuesday Poem – Beyond the Western Sky by Helen McKinlay

be sad for those whose spirits drift

among the dunes

afraid and hesitant

but not for me

for I have gone

beyond the Western sky

beyond where the crooked houses

perch above the marram

beyond the sandbank

and the oyster catchers’ dabble

beyond the ocean

beyond time

This sounds like a memorial poem but it’s not. It was inspired by the endless horizons of one of my favourite places, Rototai Beach in Golden Bay.  One does look toward the mountains which stretch to the West Coast. It’s very close. For me it is a place of peace, a place where one’s spirit can stretch out beyond the demands of everyday life …
